The Kanan Kay Alliance (AKK, acronym in Spanish) has been a driving force in marine conservation, spearheading the establishment of 17 fishing refuge zones (FRZs) that collectively protect over 18,000 hectares and facilitating the commitment of three communities to design new FRZs. By collaborating with its partners, including fishing and tourism cooperatives, the AKK has contributed to the recovery of fisheries and habitat conservation, achieving a 52% increase in biomass of key species in 12 years. In the second half of 2023, the project focused on strengthening communities by providing training and workshops, benefiting 20 fishermen with the exchange of experiences and the development of two key consultancies to expand the FRZs and the strengthening of the AKK’s communication capacities.
